Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist whose creative vision took shape through Monotronic, the indietronica collective he founded in 2016. Conceived as a fluid and collaborative project rather than a conventional band, Monotronic reflects his belief that music thrives when ego recedes and shared intention leads. He envisions instruments blending into a single current of sound, guided by what he often describes as a tribal and communal spirit.

In this framework, each musician contributes ideas, textures, and emotional nuance. The emphasis is not on individual spotlight but on cohesion. Songs develop organically through interaction, resulting in layered arrangements that feel immersive and alive. Monotronic’s identity rests on this collective pulse, where collaboration becomes both method and message.

Scholarship and Sound

Elkholy’s academic background profoundly informs his artistic path. He earned a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra. The book explores how a community of tropical foragers in Indonesia experiences identity, environment, and embodiment within the rainforest.

His research demanded deep immersion, including two years living among the Orang Rimba. Nights were filled with dense soundscapes of insects, wind, and wildlife. Elkholy has described the forest as an intricate orchestra, layered with complex rhythms and shifting textures. That experience sharpened his awareness of how sound shapes perception. It also reinforced his fascination with rhythm as something communal rather than mechanical.

Anthropology gave Elkholy a vocabulary for understanding culture, but music became the emotional counterpart to that intellectual exploration. His scholarship and songwriting share a common thread: attention to lived experience and the ways human beings find meaning through collective expression.

Global Pathways and Cultural Exchange

Long before Monotronic’s formation, Elkholy spent three years traveling the world, absorbing influences across Asia and Southeast Asia. In Calcutta, he studied Indian music, expanding his sense of rhythm, phrasing, and melodic development. These encounters broadened his understanding of musical structure and challenged Western conventions that often dominate indie and pop frameworks.

Rather than directly replicating traditional forms, Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic internalized their principles. Subtle rhythmic interplay, atmospheric layering, and tonal color now surface naturally in his compositions. His global experiences continue to inform Monotronic’s sound, which blends indie rock and pop with indietronica textures and understated world music sensibilities.

Originally from New York City, Elkholy now lives in Los Angeles. There, he converted his garage into a recording studio that serves as his creative headquarters. The space mirrors his independent ethos, allowing experimentation and collaboration to unfold without constraint.

The Arrival of Waiting for You

In January 2026, Monotronic released Waiting for You, a genre-blending album that highlights Elkholy’s evolution as a songwriter and producer. The project includes music videos for “Looking Away,” “Everything Moves,” “Sun Song,” “Photograph,” and “Kettle Song.” Three of these premiered at number one on VEVO, signaling strong audience engagement.

The album features bassist Mohini Dey on the track “Close Enough” and legendary drummer Omar Hakim, known for his work with Daft Punk and David Bowie, who performed drums across the record. Hakim’s dynamic playing brings both precision and warmth, anchoring the album’s polished yet expressive tone.

Visual storytelling plays a key role in the album’s identity. The video for “Everything Moves” unfolds inside a Los Angeles escape room, amplifying the song’s urgency and momentum. “Kettle Song” blends unexpected imagery, including K-pop dancers, Samurai warriors, and an oversized kettle drum from a recent Godzilla film. These creative choices underscore Monotronic’s cinematic ambitions.

Many songs on Waiting for You were written by Elkholy while spending time on the beaches of Tulum, Mexico. The setting provided space for reflection, and the lyrics carry an introspective quality. Critics have described the album as cohesive and atmospheric, praising its synth-rich textures and emotionally resonant songwriting.

Building Momentum from the Debut

Monotronic’s self-titled debut in 2019 introduced the collective to a wider audience. The release received attention from outlets such as Rolling Stone, Relix, Rock Cellar, and Hype Magazine. Over time, the project attracted an impressive roster of collaborators, including musicians who have worked with Daft Punk, Joe Jackson, Chic, Robert Randolph, The Spin Doctors, and Dweezil Zappa.

Live performance has remained central to Monotronic’s growth. The band has played major New York venues and festivals, including Disc Jam, Meeting of the Minds, and MUSEXPO. In the fall of 2025, they completed a sold-out United States tour, performing in cities including Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and two stops in Texas.

Critical Voices and Expanding Recognition

Following the debut, Monotronic continued releasing singles that broadened their reach. “Kids of Summer” and “Buy Yourself a Dream” both premiered at number one on VEVO. Additional singles such as “Just Another Day,” “Livin’ in a Lie,” and “In Between,” featuring Russel Graham on vocals, further strengthened the band’s profile.

“Kids of Summer,” initially released during the pandemic, was later reworked with Omar Hakim. Its accompanying video captures the spirit of New York summers, filmed throughout Manhattan with skateboarders, breakdancers, and psychedelic visuals. The track debuted at number one on VEVO’s Incoming Indie playlist.

The 2024 EP, Looking Away, generated a strong critical response. Reviewers praised its blend of indie, electronic, and world influences. Rolling Stone highlighted the title track’s festival appeal, while other outlets commended the band’s cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Two tracks from that EP later appeared on Waiting for You, linking past momentum with present achievement.

Through scholarship, travel, and collaboration, Ramsey Elkholy continues to shape Monotronic as a living, evolving collective. His work bridges intellect and emotion, grounding modern production in a philosophy of shared creation and global awareness.
